Legacy Project

Pickleball, the fast-paced sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is rapidly gaining popularity across the United States. The West Branch Lions Club is looking to meet demand in Eastern Iowa with plans to build a four-court complex. In 2024, the West Branch Lions Club voted to develop a “Legacy Project” that has a broad impact on the community and could be around for many years to come. That project is a set of four pickleball courts to be constructed at Cubby Park, a municipal park in West Branch, Iowa. Pickleball participation has seen an increase of over 200 percent since 2020, thanks in large part to its accessible rules and friendly atmosphere. Over 100 players find a place to play on the two courts in West Branch at present. A regular group of around 20 hosted by the Lions Club plays weekly at the school gymnasium. With ages ranging from 15-75, the courts are filled with men and women, boys and girls—something that contributes to pickleball’s rapid growth in popularity. The game is relatively easy to learn and play, and is a great source of exercise for all skill levels. One of the Lions Club’s goals is to promote healthy living through activity and exercise; the new courts will fit right into that goal. After researching other similar projects, the Lions Club has set a goal of $150,000 to build the four-court complex. Upon completion, the courts will be given to the City of West Branch for use by the public through the Parks and Recreation Department. Fundraising has already begun, with the club working concession stands at Carver-Hawkeye Arena during the winter sports season. The Club hosted a “Volley-brrrr” outdoor volleyball tournament in late March. In addition, individual club members have pledged to personally contribute to the project, with nearly $20,000 pledged as of June 2025. Lions Club 2nd Vice President, Sherry Kolpin, oversees the fundraising. She is assisted by a Grants and Large Gifts Committee tasked with applying for and seeking grants and other large donations; and by an Events Fundraising Committee tasked with planning and executing multiple fundraising events. Many Club members are involved in various other committees and are committing their time to assist in the project’s completion. The West Branch Lions Club has entered a 28E agreement with the City of West Branch to allow the project to move forward at Cubby Park, a city park located on the north side of town. Site development could start as early as the fall of 2025. The construction of the complex is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, allowing for play to begin on the new courts before the end of 2026. West Branch Lions Club members are also helping through fundraising, volunteering, and other tasks to aid in the project’s completion
